Site Analysis

Located in the city of Milan, Italy, Gallaterese II has capacity to house 2400 inhabitants. Initial stages of the design occurred during the "Italian miracle". Construction actually occurred in the midst of a recession. Between 1969 and 1974 the three phases of construction occurred. Gallaterese II was built during the second stage. It was not designed to coordinate with its landscaping, nor does it line up with any major urban surroundings. Gallaterese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-south and east-west. These indicate the primary circulation routes of the building as well as guide the relationships between the building and the rest of the complex. Most of the pedestrian access comes from the plaza along the north-south axis into the structure. This graphic shows the intent of the architects to create a strongly linear system of organization.
