Student Support Services (SSS)


Student Support Services (SSS) provides support services to target populations mandated by the federal government. These target populations include first generation college students (neither of whose parents have received a four year college degree), financial aid recipients who meet the federal income guidelines, and/or physically disabled students all of whom must show an academic need (speakers of other languages, low GPA). This assistance is provided through many different means, such as:
  • ESL/Study Skills Courses
  • Tutorial Services
  • Study Skills Seminars
  • Resource Referral
  • Advocacy
  • Test Files

Who is Eligible?

You may be eligible if:

  • You are a first-generation college students (which means neither parent/guardian graduated with a four-year college degree);

  • You meet "low income" federal guidelines (if you are eligible for the Pell Grant you may be eligible for SSS);

  • You have a disability for which you need academic support;

  • You are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States;

  • You possess the motivation for college success

What are our Services?

After acceptance into the SSS Program, students are able to utilize a variety of student oriented services including, but not limited to:

  • Extra Tutorial Services
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Academic Guidance
  • Advocacy and Assistance in Completing Financial Aid Forms
  • Study Strategies
  • Information Workshops
  • College Survival Skills
  • Access to Study Areas, Computers and Research Tools
  • Cultural (Sporting) Activities
  • Career Guidance and Referral
  • Graduate School Recommendations
  • Campus Visitations

What is Advocacy?

Each student who has been accepted into the SSS will receive advocacy to provide support and assistance in the following areas:

  • Academic Planning
    (i.e. academic advising, course scheduling, assessing degree progress, etc.)
    Financial Aid Planning
    (i.e. preparing financial aid/scholarship applications, resource management, etc.)

  • Career Planning
    (advising in conjunction with the Career Center, writing resumes, preparing for interviews, participating in career fairs, etc.)

  • Cultural Event Opportunities
    (i.e. attending symphonies, ballets, plays, etc.)
