MULTIMEDIA STUDIES PROGRAM

The University of Colorado at Denver
& Health Sciences Center

College of Arts & Media
Department of Visual Arts

The Multimedia Studies Program

The use of Multimedia content is becoming increasingly prevalent across our educational and professional working environments as well as in affecting the fabric of our social culture.

There is also a growing synthesis between the capabilities of Digital Media and the fields of Science, Engineering, Legal Litigation, Medicine and a host of other horizontal fields that are awakening to the visualization capabilities that are now maturing in Digital Media. The mission of the College of Arts and Media is to bring together a synthesis of Art, Technology and Commerce.

Upon graduation, what career options does a student have who studies Multimedia?

  • Web page design and E-Commerce
  • Multimedia content design for distance learning course delivery
  • Applications in the Medical, Legal and Scientific fields
  • Presentation Software for professional presentations/conferences
  • Simulation Training and Management Training
  • Print Design
  • Traditional Fine Art exploration and explorations into Art Installation
  • Continuation to a graduate school of choice
  • Teaching
  • The Multimedia Studies Program is concerned with the history, conceptual process, artistic design, usability theory, criticism and legal aspects of the design of electronic media.

The program also takes advantage of the inherent professional talent which is part of the Multimedia industry prevalent in the surrounding Denver metropolitan area to strengthen its faculty and to provide guest speakers.

The Multimedia Studies Program will appeal to the student who may not be seeking a traditional degree but wishes to gain and update specific skills in the production of electronic media, or, to the student who wishes to attain a four-year undergraduate B.F.A. Degree in Multimedia which features strong core components in a combination of the Liberal Arts and the Fine Arts.

Because this is an university based program, the focus is NOT on attaining software skills, but it is on theory and criticism of design and art using digital tools. Students who are seeking to simply learn trade tech skills will not find this program appealing.

The program of study is based on a foundation of these groupings of courses:

1.) Courses which comprise a Liberal Arts core.
2.) Courses which comprise a foundations core in the Fine Arts.
3.) Courses in the introduction of technology for the production of Multimedia.
4.) Courses in graphic design and usability theory.
5.) Topics courses where the student experiments in a variety of software applications and application of digital media.
5.) Courses in internship, portfolio preparation and Thesis which seek to fine tune a student's professional marketability or to help in preparation of a student's application to select graduate schools .

STUDENT LIFE ON CAMPUS AND OFF

The University of Colorado at Denver & Health Sciences Center is located on the Auraria campus, directly adjacent to the central hub of downtown Denver. Our semi-nonresidential campus is the home to three separate and unique institutions: the University of Colorado at Denver & Health Sciences Center, Metropolitan State College and the Community College of Denver. This collection of educational institutions makes for a diverse cultural and intellectual group of students and faculty.

In the fall of 2006, a new student housing facility will be opening directly adjacent to the Auraria Higher Education Center, within easy walking distance of campus and the Downtown area.  The Campus Village Apartments will house 685 Auraria Campus students in apartment style accommodations and provide students with programs and resources to help foster their academic and social success.

The campus is linked to all major city and rural bus connections and light rail commuter stations are located directly on the campus grounds.

The location of the campus brings it into close proximity to the central recreational and cultural attractions in the City of Denver. Directly bordering on the campus boundaries are Lithe's Amusement Park (all the latest high-tech thrill rides), the Denver Center For the Performing Arts (Theater, Opera, Symphony, Dance) and the Pepsi Center which is home to Denver's professional hockey and basketball pro sports teams. Within a 15 minute walk from the campus is Coor's field (professional baseball) and Mile High Stadium (professional football).

Lower downtown Denver or "LoDo" as it is called, is alive with its many coffee houses, restaurants, bookstores and art galleries and is a 5-10 minute walk from the campus. Most every night of the week is busy and alive with kinetic activity in lower downtown Denver.

The Denver Art Museum, Public Library, Denver Museum of Natural History and City Parks are all within 20 minute bus rides from the campus. Perhaps best of all Denver sits at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains which are home to some of the best skiing resorts in the world. Major ski areas are as little as a 45 minute drive from campus. Colorado is well known for its atmosphere of robust recreational activities. The Rocky Mountains are brimming with hiking, rafting and select rock climbing opportunities.

The student center is one of the most unique in the country, housed in the historic Tivoli Brewery building. This center is home to quiet study lounges, a food court, travel agency, meeting rooms, game rooms, copy services, coffee house, convenience store, student government offices, offices of student clubs and home to student sponsored concerts and events.
