What's Happening?

The University's Educational Policy and University Standards Committee (EPUS) has invited the UCDHA to present our constituencies' concerns to them. If you have any questions, comments, or additions to the following, which went to EPUS on January 6, contact Lynn Holland or Pam Laird.

  • Compensation:
  • 1. Salary increases such that the ratio of part-time to full-time faculty salaries at UCD is about the same as it is at UCB, with the end result for the near future at about $3,000. Complete parity between honorarium faculty on all UC campuses, that is, a base of $4,000 per course, should be reached as quickly as possible.
  • 2. From that base, salary increases for part-time faculty pegged to those of full-time faculty.
  • 3. Compensation for independent studies, masters and honors theses, committee work, and other service to the University community.
  • 4. Compensation for non-enrollment of prepared courses.
  • 5. No required course reduction as a result of service.
  • 6. Option to contribute to health plans from paychecks without University contributions (in order to benefit from group plan).
  • Structure of Non-tenured Positions:
  • 1. Elimination of the 2-course restriction for non-tenure track faculty.
  • 2. Development of teaching track positions or "instructorships" with yearly salaries and benefits with priority hiring of experienced part-time faculty.
  • 3. The option of contracts for one year or more.
  • 4. Initiation of a second track for part-time after some
  • number of courses, such as 6, that would entail a review process as to initiate and continue in participation in the non-compensation benefits.
  • 5. The implementation of a standard review process at the departmental level.
  • 6. With appropriate qualifications and satisfactory performance as established by review, the hiring of instructors for courses should be based on seniority among non-tenure track faculty.
  • Representation:
  • 1. Representation on the Budget Priorities Committee.
  • 2. Representation in the Faculty Senate.
  • 3. Voting rights at departmental meetings in order to enhance communication between all faculty who are actively working with students, as well as to encourage part-time faculty members' participation in decisions, including curriculum and the allocation of courses.
  • Miscellaneous matters:
  • 1. Listings in the campus directory for those moving into the second track proposed in B-4.
  • 2. Permanent library cards for those moving into the second track proposed in B-4.
  • 3. Favorable child care rates.

Agenda for February 12 Meeting

One outcome of our December meeting was to begin application to the President's Initiative Fund for a one-year paid advocacy position. Because of the range of University-wide changes in the works, this is an opportune time for us to make known both our contributions and our expectations for improvements in compensation and working conditions. However, the amount of time required to attend a wide range of meetings, keep up with correspondence, develop statistics, conduct surveys, and seek support from other UC campuses during this critical period exceeds what volunteer labor can accomplish. This January, Chancellor Lesh-Laurie gave us her support for this grant proposal. Please attend the meeting on February 12 (see page 1 for details) to contribute your comments and suggestions for this proposal.

We have assembled statistical information on compensation and work loads on this campus and have constructed a set of charts and tables that argue persuasively for our high levels of productivity and low compensation relative to full-time faculty. We have all known these realities for years, but the numbers add strongly to our position in negotiations. This information will be available to you at the meeting.

  • NEW OPPORTUNITIES
  • Honorarium Salary Task Force

The honoraria faculty have been invited to participate in the regular meetings of the Budget Priorities Committee, and a task force has been established to address the issue of our salaries. Representation on this committee is the only way by which we can assure being considered at budget time.

  • A Part-Time Faculty Computer Equipment Room

We have received some encouragement to pursue acquiring a room with computers and telephones for the use of part-time faculty, If you are interested in helping to develop this proposal, please contact us.

  • Working Within Departments

Winning the support of full-time faculty is an important step in accomplishing our goals. We encourage part-time faculty to meet with your chairs and others in your individual departments to establish lines of communication. Successful changes in one department can become models for others to follow.
