FIRESIDE CHATS: the next Fireside Chat of the season will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2000, at 7 p.m. at Red Rocks Elementary School at the west end of Morrison, Colorado.  Dr. Bob Raynolds will speak on "The Geologic History of the Denver Basin".

On Thursday, March 30, 2000, at 7 pm at the Morrison Town Hall, Tim Connors,
National Park Service Geologist will speak on "Cutting edge technology to show Geology: Digital Geologic Maps"

Directions on how to get to Red Rocks Elementary School: From Colorado 470, take the Morrison Road (Colorado Highway 8) exit west, proceed west through town to the last traffic light (where Highway 8 turns south. Turn right up the hill to Red Rocks Elementary School.

Dinosaur Discovery Days for 2000 will be held one Saturday per month April through October (to be announced)

These tours of Dinosaur Ridge (plus special activities at the Visitor Center) will be held free to the public except for an optional $2.00 fee to ride the bus over Dinosaur Ridge. Tours will be given from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the last bus would leave at 3:00 PM) on each of these Saturdays. More volunteers to help us with these tours (either as geology guides, or to help at the Visitor Center or information tent) are always needed, and appreciated; call Karen Hester at (303) 697-DINO or e-mail to director@dinoridge.org.

to our Dinosaur Discovery Days. Ken gives talks about ostriches and
does a show-and-tell about their eggs, anatomy, and habits.</P>

<A NAME=for  2000

Step back in time, into one of the richest learning labs in the fossil record-Dinosaur Ridge! Where the first Allosaurus and Stegosaurus were discovered. Where dinosaurs of the Jurassic and the birds of today have left their tracks along one of the oldest migratory routes on Earth.

Our camp will put students side-by-side with scientists as they unravel mysteries prehistoric and current, and study some of the area's oldest and newest inhabitants. These week-long workshops are for avid young scientists who love learning and enjoy working in the field.

We offer two levels of camp: Level 1 for those coming for the first time, Level 2 for those who have completed Level 1 or a similar course.

Who may attend:
Students 10-12 years old (Level 1), and students 11-13 (Level 2)

When:
Level 1: June 14-18, and June 21-25
Level 2: June 28- July 2

All camps run from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

TEACHER'S CLASS

Dinosaur Ridge Teachers Workshop

(Colorado School of Mines Teacher Enhancement class CT-9206)

This is a class that has been given at Dinosaur Ridge for the past 5 years. From the CSM Teacher Enhancement course catalog:

"This two-day course provides an in-depth teacher orientation to the dinosaur bones and tracks found on the Dakota Hogback (Dinosaur Ridge) near Morrison, CO. It is designed to give you the background to lead your own classes on field trips to these famous and readily accessible fossil sites. The course includes a demonstration of several indoor and outdoor activities relating to the dinosaur fossils that can be used by classes of various grade levels. Participants will receive a field guide, maps, and a 100+ page booklet of reference and activity information."

The class is designed for teachers of any grade, K-12, and is limited to 22 participants. Registration fee is $85, and registration must be made through the Colorado School of Mines, Teacher Enhancement Program, Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education, telephone 273-3303. GRADUATE CREDIT TEACHER'S CLASS

Our new graduate credit, teachers' class:

"Field Studies in Natural History and Earth Science at Dinosaur Ridge, Morrison, Colorado", taught through the University of Northern Colorado Continuing Education. This two-credit course met at Dinosaur Ridge on a series of 8 weekday plus weekend dates (approx. 30 hours total class & outdoor activity time) from September 9 through October 8. Earth Sciences ESCI-584-211: Field Studies in Natural History and Earth Science at Dinosaur Ridge, Morrison, Colorado. Learn to use the natural sciences, especially the earth science phenomena so well exposed at Dinosaur Ridge, as an outdoor science classroom. Integrate what you learn into the model standards for science education. Discover how to lead a scientifically based field trip integrating geology, paleontology, biology, meteorology and human history; guide students to develop logical explanations for the interpretation of the natural features of Dinosaur Ridge and the surrounding area; and utilize methods and concepts to integrate some of the Colorado model standards for earth science in field studies near home, school or school yard. Taught by Norb Cygan, Pete Modreski, and Bob Raynolds.

Tracking Dinosaurs at CU-Denver
In Fall 1999, the Geology Department at CU-Denver will be offering a course entitled "Tracking Dinosaurs", Geology 3300, and will be offered by Dr. Martin Lockley.
