Where is Dinosaur Ridge?
View a Map of the Area

Dinosaur Ridge is geographically located west of Denver, Colorado; specifically West of Lakewood,  north of Morrison, east of Interstate 70 (closest exit is 259); west of Colorado Highway 470 (closest exit is Morrison Road), and south of the Sixth Avenue West Highway.

  • From Interstate70 in Colorado: Take Exit 259 (Morrison / Golden exit) and go south (towards Red Rocks Park) on Colorado Highway 93 / Colorado Highway 26.  As you approach Red Rocks Park, there will be a turn-off to the left  where Colorado Hwy 26 is.  There should be a sign reading "Dinosaur Ridge National Natural Landmark".  Go around the hair-pin curve and down the east side of Dinosaur Ridge. State Hwy 26 (also called Alameda Parkway) curves to the right at the bottom of the hill. The visitor center is on the left after this curve. There is parking at the visitor center and along the road over the ridge. If you park on the ridge, observe signs, and park only on the north side.
  • From Colorado Highway 470: Take the Morrison Road exit west for about 50 feet to South Rooney Road. Turn right onto South Rooney Road and proceed north to State Hwy 26 (Alameda Parkway). Turn left (west) onto Alameda Parkway and cross over C-470. The visitor center will be on the right.

NOTE for Dinosaur Discovery Days:

Because Colorado State Highway 26 (Alameda Parkway) is closed over the ridge on the Saturdays of "Dinosaur Discovery Days", come to the visitor's center via C-470 (which you can enter from I-70). On any other day, the directions given below from I-70 are valid, because State Highway 26 is open over the ridge.

Main Track Area Map

The figure below is taken from Fossil Footprints of the Dinosaur Ridge Area. This new map of the main Dinosaur Ridge tracksite was completed in December 1994, by Dr. Martin Lockley of the University of Colorado at Denver. The map shows many more tracks (335) and trackways (at least 37) than on previous maps. Ornithopod (e.g. Iguanodon) tracks are shown in blue; theropod (e.g. Coelurus) tracks are shown in red. Also shown is a trackway orientation diagram for all trackways and arrows marking the travel directions of small- and large ornithopods. This main tracksite marks where planned new construction will upgrade viewing and teaching facilties at the site, which is now surrounded by a protective fence. This tracksite is located on the east side of Dinosaur Ridge -- see the track symbol on the area map

3-D Map of the Dinosaur Ridge Area

This view is from the heart of Denver, looking due west; the yellow colors mark the tops of mountains in the Rocky Mountain foothills. The "Dakota Hogback" (i.e. Dinosaur Ridge) is the prominent ridge running from middle left toward the upper right (S-SE to N-NW). In front of the ridge is Green Mountain (shown as a reddish color, indicating its higher elevation). The Dinosaur Ridge visitor center is located in the valley between Green Mountain and the Dakota HogbackDinosaur Ridge.
