Subject: The Earth Day Groceries Project!
Dear Educators,
Earth Day is April 22nd. Here is a great, free activity to remind your students about the importance of their environment and to get your school actively involved with its community on Earth Day - The Earth Day Groceries Project! < http://www.halcyon.com/arborhts/earthday.html >
This year is the fourth year the word of this project has been spread by and reported on the Internet. Last year 180 schools and 70,000 students across North America participated!
The Earth Day Groceries Project doesn't take a lot of Internet time. The work (and the joy) happens in schools and classrooms when students begin decorating grocery bags which will end up in the kitchens of members of their community. Briefly, here's how it works:
- Schools get paper grocery bags from a local grocery store.
- Students at the school decorate the bags with colorful
environmental Earth Day pictures and messages.
- The school returns the bags to the grocery store.
- The grocery store hands out the bags to customers on Earth Day (full of groceries).
- Schools send in a brief email report.
- Reports are emailed to participants and are posted on
the WWW. Pictures, too!
You do not need to register. Complete project information is on the web site at: http://www.halcyon.com/arborhts/earthday.html You also can get there from the host school, Arbor Heights Elementary, at its www site (see below). Stop by and read some of the more than 300 reports from schools who have participated over the last three years. Find out how many were involved from your state or province!
News for this year! If you do not have a local grocery
store that
uses paper grocery bags, you can get bags to decorate from the
Paper Bag
Council if your grocer agrees to distribute them.
