* NEXT LIVE BROADCAST.... APRIL 24th, 1997 *
*****************************************************************

Live from Mars, a collaboration between Passport to Knowledge and the Mars Exploration Directorate of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is following both Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Pathfinder on their exciting journeys to the Red Planet.

Pathfinder will land *Sojourner,* the micro-rover, on Mars, July 4, 1997 -- the first roving vehicle ever placed by humans on the surface of another planet. Mars Global Surveyor arrives in September '97, begins mapping Mars in early 1998, and should continue in orbit for two more years!

Three live telecasts are scheduled between now and November of 1997. (The first program, *Countdown* aired November 19, 1996 and is now available on videotape and via NASA-TV re-broadcasts) Live From Mars, Program 2, "Cruising Between the Planets" originates from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory April 24, 1997 during NSF's Science and Technology Week. "Cruising..." will take students behind the scenes at America's premier laboratory for robotic planethe status of both Mars Missions, and introduce them to the men and women who live and work at a place that is a true bridge to the 21st Century.

Each telecast and accompanying on-line and print materials allows educators to customize the learning experience, whether they use only one program, live or on tape, or follow the Mars missions across the school years.

As with all Passport to Knowledge projects, interactive on-line opportunities, and an and an original Teacher's Guide & Kit make the human dimension of contemporary science and high tech careers come to life. Curriculum strands include: Mars geology and evolution as a planet, robotics, interplanetary weather, exobiology, mission planning, rocketry, comparisons between planets of the solar system, and Mars imaging resources.

LIVE telecast air date "Cruising Between the Planets" -- THURSDAY APRIL 24, 1997, 13:00-14:00 EST and will be broadcast live on NASA-TV and PBS's main satellite, Telestar 402R. (Please visit our web site for more details)

Please note, NSF's National Science and Technology Week for 1997, with the theme of "The Future of Communications," runs from April 20-26, 1997! Live From Mars provides many opportunities for you to connect this year's theme "Webs, Wires, and Waves" to your classroom.
