June 5, 1997, Dodgeville, WI -- From July 7, 1997 for approximately six
weeks, a live sailing adventure will be posted for free on the World Wide
Web for educators and arm-chair explorers alike. Live coverage of the
Viking 1000 Voyage, organized by the Vinland Foundation and Lands' End
Merchants, will report as the crew, led by writer W. Hodding Carter Jr.,
sails and rows in a replica Viking ship up the west coast of Greenland and
down the coast of Canada to Newfoundland, re-enacting the voyage one
thousand years ago of Leif Ericsson to North America. Hourly updates on the
boat's progress and regional weather conditions will be posted on the
Viking 1000 Web site, allowing followers to track the ship's progress.
A special section of the Web site will be dedicated to educators, showing
how to track the incoming data from the ship, how to map voyage progress,
and providing historical background as well as classroom and family
activities. In addition, visitors to the site will be able to request a
free weekly e-mail update of the Viking 1000 voyages for the duration of
the voyage.
