AMWA, American Medical Writers Association

Purpose:To promote excellence in biomedical communication, bring together communicators and educators in the medical or allied professions and science worldwide, and provide continuing professional education through certification programs.
Member profile:Fifty percent are medical/life scence professionals; the other half are English and communication professionals.
Membership: A national fee of $75 a year includes local membership. Certification is also available.
Meetings:The Rocky Mountain Chapter meets monthly in the Denver area September through May for hands-on writing exercises at 6:30 PM, followed by a program from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

AQP, Association for Quality and Participation

Purpose:To advocate employee involvement in integrating quality and participation in the workplace; and to motivate and teach individuals, teams, and organizations to design, implement, and sustain high performance.
Member profile:Team members, team leaders, and quality professionals.
Membership: A national fee of $75 a year; a local fee of $25 a year.
Meetings:AQP meets the third Thursday (except July, August, and December), 5:00 to 7:30 PM, at the Doubletree Inn in Westminster.

ASTD, American Society for Training and Development

Purpose:To promote workplace learning and performance to human resource development (HRD) professionals. The local chapter conducts training and educational programs, offers networking with other ASTD chapters and HRD professionals, and provides informational materials.
Member profile:Fifty percent are internal trainers, educators, and other human resource professionals; the other half are consultants.
Membership: Rocky Mountain Chapter, $60 a year, plus $10 new member setup fee (does not include membership in international ASTD). Contact Sam Sargent at (303) 572-7522. Approximately 550 members locally.

CHRA, Colorado Human Resource Association

Purpose:To provide opportunity for growth and development of human resource professionals, thereby raising the standards of performance for all phases of human resource activity.
Member profile:Human resource professionals.

CIN, Colorado Issues Network

Purpose:To provide an interactive learning network through which member organizations and individuals can anticipate strategic changes and opportunities in a fast-changing and information-rich world.
Member profile:Members are businesses, higher education institutions, school systems, government organizations and non-profits, all represented by individuals who are usually planners, managers, educators, organizational development experts, and marketers.
Membership: Annual fee of $550 for organizations.
Meetings:Meetings are held about every three weeks at varied times and locations. They last a full or half day and often take the form of seminars or live video conferences.

CODN, Colorado Organization Development Network

Purpose:To enhance the growth and development of organization development practitioners, to contribute to the empowerment and professionalism of the field, to link members with the needs and opportunities of organizations, and to provide a support network.
Member profile:Internal and external organizational development practitioners.

EAPA, Employee Assistance Professionals Association

Purpose:To promote the highest standards of practice in mental health programs for employees and continuing development of professionals, programs, and services.
Member profile:Mental health professionals working internally and externally on programs for employees; also mental health therapists who provide services to those programs.
Membership: Membership includes both national and state dues at one of seven levels: individual, associate, honorary, organizational, student, emeritus, and retried. And individual membership for someone living in Colorado is $155 a year. Certification is also available.

ISPI, International Society for Performance and Instruction

Purpose:To increase productivity in the workplace through performance and instructional technologies such as education and job training, job aids, feedback systems, personnel section, and human factors.
Member profile:Trainers, instructional designers, organizational development experts, and others interested in improving workplace performance.

IST, Information Systems Trainers

Purpose:To help members grow professionally, to exchange information through networking and newsletters, and to contribute to the community via scholarships and charitable activities.
Member profile:Computer trainers, technical writers, courseware vendors, classroom providers, technical support specialists, programmers. Members include both corporate trainers and consultants.

STC, Society for Technical Communication

Purpose:To improve the quality and effectiveness of technical communication for audiences worldwide, to promote professionalism and the exchange of information among its members, and to educate the community on the value of technical communication.
Member profile:Writers, editors, graphic designers, illustrators, educators, and consultants who develop instructional materials, proposals, reports, policies and procedures, and other documents in either print or electronic form for industry and government.
Membership: International, $95 a year, plus a one-time enrollment fee of $15; includes quarterly journal, monthly magazine, and local dues. Students, $40 a year with no enrollment fee. Contact Laura Beckman at (303) 255-8720.
