Description: This course will examine environmental change in the United States from the colonial era forward to the late 20th century. The emphasis, however, will be on the mid-19th and 20th centuries, the times that have seen the greatest impact of industrialization and related events. We will look at such subjects as the Columbian exchange; air, land, and water pollution; government's role in creating and addressing pollution and environmental change; and conservation and preservation, among other topics as we look at American development.
