PortfolioWhat is a portfolio? The Master's Portfolio is the capstone of your ILT Program. It allows you to bring the many projects together into a format which you can proudly show to current and prospective employers. The portfolio is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply skills and knowledge in the rapidly growing field of learning technologies. If you are a licensed teacher, your portfolio can become the basis for your state-mandated teacher portfolio. The portfolio will have several parts, including a reflection letter to introduce the portfolio, a current résumé, at least three products created during your ILT program, and a Master's Project. All of these pieces will be gathered into a cohesive and attractive portfolio that includes a matrix to provide an overview. For more detail on each of these, read further, or view the portfolio rubric . The portfolio is submitted and reviewed by the ILT faculty during the semester in which you intend to graduate. In order to graduate, you must receive a "pass" judgment on the portfolio. What is the reflection letter? The reflection letter gives you the chance to clearly articulate your professional goals and to describe how the products in the portfolio relate to these goals. This is done by reflecting on what you have learned and how this learning has enhanced your ability to reach your professional goals. Why do I need to include a resume?A current resume gives you the tools to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. Even if you don't intend to pursue a new position at the present time, it is still vital to have a current résumé in order to demonstrate your new qualifications. This tool can help you successfully negotiate for an increase in salary and position with your current employer. How many products do I include in the portfolio? The portfolio must include at least three products in addition to the Master's Project. However, it is advisable to include five to seven to ensure that you meet all of the responsibilities, as well as to provide a broader selection to show employers. View the portfolio rubric for more detail about the responsibilities. What is the Master's Project? The Master's Project is completed during your Field Experience or Internship. This project provides you a chance to synthesize your learning experiences in the ILT program, as well as providing an authentic way to assess your instruction technology skills. This project is equivalent to a comprehensive exam, and should be of appropriate scope. Typically, projects are negotiated with your advisor, who will make sure that the project meets the criteria, as well as making sure you don't bite off more than you can chew. In general, projects should represent three semester credit hours, or at least 90 total work hours. View the Master's Project guidelines for more details. What is the matrix? The matrix provides an overview of the portfolio. In many way, it serves as an advance organizer, clearly showing which pieces of the portfolio meet each requirement. The guidelines for creating the matrix are included in the portfolio rubric . Can I see portfolio's that other students have done?Portfolios that are comprised of hard copy materials, either print, VHS, or digital media like CD-ROM's and ZIP disks, are available for viewing by making an appointment with May Lowry . The following students are making their portfolios available on the Internet, although currently, none are totally completed:
What do I do if I receive a "no pass"?A "pass" is given if all requirements are met, (as shown on the portfolio rubric ). If your portfolio lacks an item, a faculty member will contact you as soon as possible. If it is possible, you can change the portfolio immediately and have it reviewed again for a passing grade. However, if the necessary changes are time-consuming, you will be unable to graduate until they are finished and the portfolio undergoes another review. You have one calendar year to submit a revised portfolio which meets all of the requirements. Do I still have to take a comprehensive exam? No. The portfolio takes the place of the comprehensive exam. You will receive either a 'pass' or 'no-pass', as well as a possible honors designation. You will be formally notified of your exam results after the end of the semester. In cases where notice of your graduation affects your employment status, you may ask your advisor to write a letter indicating your successful completion of all program requirements. Will I have help completing my portfolio? While you will be working on your portfolio throughout your program, much of your final work in compiling your portfolio is completed within IT 6999: Leadership and Practice. This gives you the chance to have faculty and peers review the portfolio and make suggestions before you submit if for formal review during your final semester. |
