of Colorado at Denver Intensive Summer Study in Germany 3-Week Course in Language & Culture Partner University in Northern Germany: Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg (Niedersachsen) Germany Summer Program 3 weeks from mid July through early August: - Students should arrive at least one day in advance or earlier. - Daily instructional period: approximately 9am - 3pm M-F with variations. - Orientation gathering meets on the Sunday before first day of classes. Academic Credit 6 Transfer Credits (to UCD German) including: - GER 2995 (3 credits) Counts as third semester German. - GER 3995 (3 credits) Applies to all German programs at UCD. - Students should request pass/fail credit when applying. - Alternate course credit is available by special arrangement. Costs Program fee costs much less than $1500 and includes: - 6 Units of Transfer Credit - Housing in Oldenburg - Cultural Programs - Local Excursions - Estimates for Additional Expenses include: Airfare to and from Oldenburg: $600 -- $1200+ - Food: $300 ($100 per week) - Regional Transportation: $120 (Required excursions are already included in the base price.) - Postage, Souveniers, Entertainment, Miscellanious Expenses: $100 -- $500+ Prerequisites German Language Skills Requirements: - Students must have completed one year of college German. - Optionally, students may have completed two years of high school German. - Students may also participate upon receiving permission from program advisors. Age Requirements: - All Students must be at least 18 years of age. - "Senior Citizens" are welcome and encouraged to participate. Deadlines: - Applications should be received in Oldenburg before April 1st. - Late applicants can be accommodated on a space-available basis only. - Students should request and return a completed "buddy application form" ASAP. - Housing applications should be made to Oldenburg ASAP. Finacial Aid: - Students may apply fanancial aid to this study abroad program. - You must be registered for the program prior to the release of funds. - Applicants must fill out a separate study abroad finacial aid form. - For more details see Dave Aker in the finacial aid office. More Information Housing: - Housing is provided through the program. - Private (single) dorm rooms are provided for most students. - Shared kitchen facilites are found on each floor of the dorm. - Shared bath and toilet facilities are located on each floor. - Housing is close to the instructional facilites. - You will live among native German students. - This is a great opportunity to learn about German (student) culture. - You will find this one of the best ways to practice your language skills. Tranportation to the Program: - You must arrange and pay for your own transportation to and from Oldenburg. - Feel free to travel around Europe before and after the program. - Some regional excusion transportation will be provided as part of the program. Getting around in Oldenburg: - Bikes are lent to you during your stay in Oldenburg. - The bikes are a great asset to the program. - Oldenburg is big enough to entertain you and small enough to go everywhere by bike. - A bike will save you money on bus and taxi fares. - With a bike, your local transportation costs can be essentially free! Food: - You are responsible for your own eating expenses. - University facilities provide good inexpensive food M-F on campus. - You have access to cooking facilities in your dorm. - A good hot meal is served M-F in the student cafeteria at noon. - Students can feed themselves for as little as $8 per day. - Eating on campus is an excellent opportunity for you to meet German peers. Buddy System: - All program participants are matched up with one or two German "buddies." - Buddies are native Germans living in Oldenburg. - You can meet with your buddy as often or seldom as you like. - Buddies are invited along on the excursions and to social events. - You will gain a personal insight to the German culture through your buddy. - Students enjoy practicing their German language skills with the buddies. - Everyone meets new German friends. - Buddies help show you around the town. - The program strives to match you up with a Buddy having similar interests to you. Free Time: - Participants have time to be on their own in Oldenburg. - Most excursions are optional. - You are free to go exploring on your own, if you like. |
