This brief study guide is based liberally upon a guide prepared by the faculty at Grinnell College in Iowa. I owe them and my son a great deal for bringing the guide to my attention. The guide consists of three parts: One outlining the Survey Q, Three R Method of Study; a guide to taking notes and marking your text; and finally some hints on taking different kinds of tests.
The method works well. Over the years I have seen students who were failing my introductory class improve their grades to a high C, low B over the course of the semester. How successful you will be with the guide depends upon how diligently you apply the principals and suggestions presented. Good fortune.
If you find this guide useful to you, please tell your friends about it and how they can get a copy.
1. An Outline of the Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review Method of Study
Please read the method of study before going to either taking notes or taking tests.
2. Marking the Text or Taking Notes
Please read method of study before reading 'taking notes.' Taking notes will make more sense to you if you are properly prepared by the method of study.
Please do not rely on just the taking test guide. These methods will not be of much help if you have not first done the study and review on which the test taking guide relies. We assume that you have read and have some knowledge of the material in the text and in my notes.
