Unit 10: Is the state evil? Is it necessary? In this unit we will provide some answers for these questions. Every human society has to have some institution that will arbitrate disputes among its members and defend those members from other societies. Increasingly this activity is taken on by the state or by a civil government. In this unit we will look at the nature of power, the nature of the state and how it might have come to be. The unit will conclude with a discussion of the power structures that exist in modern communities.
