Individuals and Groups

This section of the course concerns the manner in which individuals are linked into the social group. First we consider the relations that exist among our biological nature, our culture and our society. Next we turn to the process by which we actually become human beings functioning in the society of which we are a part -- the process of socialization. Socialization teaches us who and what we are, we also learn to play and fill roles within the society. Finally we close this section with an examination of the consequences of failure to be properly socialized, when we fail to conform to the expectations of the roles we play in the society. A part of this examination involves the understanding of social control -- how our groups and the society 'control' our behavior and assure our conformity.
