Major Requirements
A Major in Sociology is accomplished by completing at least 34 hours in Sociology. At least 16 of the 34 hours must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level) courses. The maximum number of hours permitted for a major is 48. The major consists of required core courses (19 hours) and electives in Sociology (15-26 hours). Elective courses must be completed with a minimum cumulative C (2.0) grade point average (F's will not be averaged in). The core consists of the following courses, which must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better in each individual course: (*Must be taught by UCD faculty).  We also offer courses on-line, which can be taken to complete BA requirements in Sociology.

Sociology 1001- Introduction to Sociology - 3 Credit Hours  (may be transferred in)

Sociology 3001- Urban Sociology - 3 Credit Hours  (may be transferred in)

Sociology 3111- Introduction to Research Methods - 3 Credit Hours

Sociology 3121- Introduction to Statistics - 4 Credit Hours

Sociology 3151- History of Sociological Theory - 3 Credit Hours

Sociology 3161- Contemporary Sociological Theory - 3 Credit Hours (prerequisite...SOC 3151)

All prospective majors should contact the Major Advisor as soon as they declare Sociology as their major and as early in their academic career as possible. Transfer and returning students should consult with the Major Advisor the first semester they enroll at UCD. All majors are required to discuss completion of the core courses with the Major Advisor.

In cooperation with Arapahoe Community College, the Community Colleges of Denver and Aurora, the department accepts transfers to a Major in Sociology from their paralegal certificate programs. Students transferring under this agreement must talk with the Sociology Major Advisor about the specifics of this agreement and the completion of the degree in Sociology. Students wishing to graduate with departmental honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude) must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and a minimum GPA of 3.2 in Sociology courses. Information on the specific requirements are available in the Department of Sociology or you can click here to read the requirements. Qualified students are encouraged to apply for the Honors Program no later than the first semester of their senior year.
