Hohokam Housing

The Hohokam lived in simple housing units. These houses were usually large and square shaped. They were built in foot deep pits and constructed of verticle posts which supported brush roofs and sides of slanting poles covered with clay. Above is a photo of a Pima house which is just like that of the Hohokam. Archeologists estemate that a hundred houses existed in the village simulaneously. Each house lasted about 25 years. The discovery of successive layers of floors indicate to archeologists that newer houses were built in the same location of previous ones which had been destroyed by weather or fire. Archeologists estimate that the Hohokam built about 5,000 houses all together. They built all their houses the same way during the entire 1200 years the village existed.
