Penol de Santa Rosalia

Weigand's map of the site

The Classic period site of Peñol de Santa Rosalia is located atop a spur in the hills along the western edge of the Tequila valleys. It is located in a highly strategic location for watching traffic entering the valleys below, and may be another boundary site ringing the Teuchitlan core. Unlike other examples of this type of site, however, Santa Rosalia is a large and significant site in its own right, and hence poses a problem to the overall pattern. We visited the site in July of 2000 and it is quite impressive. It is located on a relatively small pass cutting across the mountains from one pocket of the Tequila valleys to another.
