This discussion of mythology and ideology in Italian Renaissance Art refers to Italian paintings. But this reading is important because the same mythology and ideology played out in the great gardens of the Renaissance. The first gardens in Italy were gardens of Cosimo di Medici and his circle. Cosimo founded the Neoplatonic Academy, which met in his garden where they discussed the Platonic ideas of art and beauty, of love and nature. It can be said that Italian Humanism was born in a garden.
