RATIONALE:
In early summer, through an internet discussion, Lorraine Sherry
connected with other distance education practitioners in the process of
exploring issues in distance learning. Dr. Esko Johnson of Kokkola
Institute of Technology, e-mailed her to further explore what was being
done at the University of Colorado at Denver that might be of interest
for their projects at Kokkola Institute of Technology. During the course
of the discussion, Dr. Johnson expressed a desire for all of his people
at OPTEK (Finnish Association for Learning Technology) to be able to
dialogue with the University of Colorado experts working in the area of
distance learning and proposed that we set up a connection so that a
panel of University of Colorado experts could be assembled and present to
an already planned conference with OPTEK on distance learning to be held
at 6 AM Mountain Time on October 12, 1996. Lorraine, working with
faculty in Instructional Technology, invited Clark Nelson, Dr. Dianna
Lawyer-Brook, and Ellen Waterman to participate.
The Auraria Media Center was contacted for feasibility studies of
possibilities to do this live, interactive video broadcast with Finland
and determined costs to be approximately $2000 to $3000. We are asking
for joint sponsorship from the University of Colorado at Denver and
Finnish Association for Learning Technology, in the form of matching
funds. This funding would cover basic costs such as renting the studio,
conducting the signal, and technical support. The professionals on both
sides of the Atlantic will be donating their time, as they feel that this
endeavor will increase our common knowledge and expertise in distance
learning, with special emphasis on foreign languages.
It is our feeling that showcasing the University of Colorado Denver as a
vital player in the development of the whole field of distance education
delivery is important. We feel that participation at-a-distance in this
European conference would provide a major opportunity for further
positioning the University of Colorado at Denver in the development of
excellence in distance learning programs, not only locally but
internationally.
Reply from Finland: proposal accepted
