I was born in New York City, moved to Westport, Connecticut when I was five, and often miss being along the coast. I graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, with a degree in history in 1989. My graduate work was at the University of Iowa, where I had fields in Modern Britain, Modern France, and Early Modern Cultural History. My dissertation, "Body Languages of Labor: The Politics of Women's Work and Health," combined medical and social history, and won the Graduate Dean's Distinguished Dissertation Award in the Humanities. After receiving my PhD at Iowa in 1997, I taught for a year at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse, then came to UCD in 1999.
When I'm not in the office, I hang out with my family: Michael Levine-Clark, the collections development librarian at DU (a very good marriage for a historian!) and Isabel Levine-Clark, a first-grader at Ebert Elementary. I sing with a madrigal group (Ye Wanton Singers) -- look for our concerts around the winter holidays and mid-May. I enjoy cooking, eating, and drinking with friends; reading mystery novels; and watching sports (go Mets!)
