-- How to Use the Co-Edit Tool --

1. Open one of the drafts posted in the Co-Edit Folder of your course, in the Classes Folder on the Sage Server.

If you are not in a Writers' Worskshop course, you can still use this tool. Use any word processing file.

2. Highlight the entire draft.

The best way is to go to the "Edit" Menu, and choose "SelectAll".

3. Copy the entire draft.

"Edit" Menu; choose "Copy".

4. Open the Co-Edit Tool by clicking (once) on the blue text.             Help!

Note: The Co-Edit Tool is set up in "Frames" -- in other words, small windows inside of a Web page.
If you would prefer to work in a "No-Frames" version of the tool -- with each part of the tool in its own Web page -- then click (once) here. (A new Netscape window will open on top of this one, with the "No-Frames" Co-Edit Tool. Be sure to come back to this window for further instructions.)

5. Paste the draft into the window that says "Paste the Draft here!"

> Highlight the sentence "Paste the Draft Here!"

> Paste the draft you copied before. ("Edit" Menu; choose "Paste".)

6. Select the guidelines for the particular type of grammar or writing style you're looking for in this draft. The guidelines will appear in the window beside the draft you're editing.

To select the guidelines you're going to use, click (once) on the appropriate title.

If you're using the "Frames" version of the Co-Edit Tool, click on the Netscape window you opened before. (It's probably to the left and just behind this page of instructions.) Then choose from the list of titles in the right-hand column of that window.

If you're using the "NO-Frames" version of the Co-Edit Tool, choose from the list of titles below.

Editors' Tools
Grammar Tools Style Tools
Compound/Complex Sentences Excellent Advice on Writing
Punctuation by Instinct/Complex Sentences Active/Passive Verbs [Not yet active]
Complete Sentences [Not yet active] How to Make a Bad Analogy

7. Read all the way through the guidelines, then use them as you read the draft.

8. Read through the draft, making changes you think would improve the writing based on the guidelines you are using.

9. When you've finished, turn in your revised draft by filling out the form at the bottom of the Co-Edit Tool page.
