Frames are smaller windows that exist within the full browser window. The purpose of frames is to help you move from one topic to another, or from an index to a topic, without losing sight of where you started. They're also a good way to bring multiple pages into play at once without cluttering up the computer screen. That's why we've used a frame for the Co-Edit Tool -- so you can see the editing guidelines and the text you're editing at the same time.
So, what if you don't like frames? Many people hate 'em, mostly because they cram so much into so little space -- plus there's all those annoying scrollbars all over the place. What's a person to do?
First, you may find that widening the browser window gives your frames more "breathing room" and makes them easier to read and use. Second, in the Writers' Workshop you can choose the "No-Frames" option for using tools. Each tool's instructions will include a "Frames" and "No-Frames" option. Just click on the one you want.
