Writers' Workshop:
Guidelines for Making Good Looking Web Pages
These guidelines were proposed by the Fourth
Quarter (97-98) WebWriting Class
after a review of sample sites.
- should be simple (example, Haring.com)
- must be catchy
- must have cool pix
- must have cool background
- should have cool font (example,
Severe Tire Damage)
- must have cool colors
- should have big letters
- should be flashy, BUT: - Readable text
- Color
- Size
- Font
- Relationship to background
· Legitimate communication purpose
- Should do more than blither on about how cool the author is, or what the author's favorite color is
- Must be appropriate for public school
-- "Educational" purpose
-- Protection of young eyes
- Must have integrity about information and representation of self

- should load quickly
· Harmony between images, text, and background
text, movement, and some animations... affect how quickly it loads
(Have you ever noticed how annoying text is?)
- Unique but non-clashing color for links
- Must be clear in its purpose and what it communicates (example,
CNET features - digital life - truth, lies, and the Internet)
-- "Mature" themes questionable
-- No lies
