Writers' Workshop:

Guidelines for Making Good Looking Web Pages

These guidelines were proposed by the Fourth Quarter (97-98) WebWriting Class
after a review of sample sites.

· Opening Page

- should load quickly

- should be simple (example, Haring.com)

- must be catchy

- must have cool pix

- must have cool background

- should have cool font (example, Severe Tire Damage)

- must have cool colors

- should have big letters

- should be flashy, BUT:

flashing text, movement, and some animations... affect how quickly it loads
(Have you ever noticed how annoying flashing text is?)
· Harmony between images, text, and background
- Unique but non-clashing color for links

- Readable text

- Color

- Size

- Font

- Relationship to background

· Legitimate communication purpose

- Must be clear in its purpose and what it communicates (example, CNET features - digital life - truth, lies, and the Internet)

- Should do more than blither on about how cool the author is, or what the author's favorite color is

- Must be appropriate for public school

-- "Mature" themes questionable

-- "Educational" purpose

-- Protection of young eyes

- Must have integrity about information and representation of self

-- No lies
